SUMMARY:OID Event– "Continuing the Search for Equity: Representation of B
lack Scientists in Optics and Photonics\," Michael J. Williams
DESCRIPTION:OID Anti-Racist Series | "Continuing the Search for Equity: Adv
ancing the Need for More Representation of Black Scientists in Optics and
Photonics"\nAbstract\nThe events of 2020 have forced us all to confront th
e dark truths of racial injustice and police brutality that so many Black
people have endured for decades. The scientific community especially had i
ts own awakening to the bias\, indifference and discrimination that Black
scientists have seen and experienced\, including the fact that\, as a whol
e\, the many contributions that Black scientists have given to science hav
e not been embraced nor celebrated by their colleagues\, mainly because of
their skin color. In this presentation\, Michael Williams describes how h
e was able to earn the PhD in optics via historically Black colleges and u
niversities\, how the Black scientific community responded to the cry for
racial equality\, and why it is so important to advocate on their behalf f
or racial equity in the sciences.\n\nThis is an in-person event that will
also be available via Zoom.\nSpeaker\nMichael J. Williams is an alum of th
ree Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Morehouse College (physi
cs\, 2009)\, Fisk University material science/physics\, master's 2012) and
Delaware State University (optics\, PhD 2018). He has over seven years of
experience in materials characterization and optical spectroscopy and two
year's experience in application engineering and supply chain management.
His PhD research involved the investigation of the linear\, nonlinear and
fluorescent characterization of various nanodiamond suspensions using wel
l-established characterization methods and techniques.\n\nCo-Sponsors: The

SUMMARY:Michael E. Moody Lecture: "Where Math and Physics Collide\," Grant
Sanderson
DESCRIPTION:Popular content creator Grant Sanderson will explore a series o
f unexpected connections beginning with a simple question of two blocks co

derstanding what happens involves an unexpected tour through kinematics\,
optics and—with a little willingness to dive into the rabbit holes that
present themselves along the way—quantum computing.\nSpeaker\nGrant Sand
erson is the author of the mathematics YouTube channel 3Blue1Brown\, with
over 4.8 million subscribers\, and 250 million views. The channel is chara
cterized by visualizations and animations that illustrate topics in math\,
ranging from lessons in linear algebra\, neural networks\, calculus\, top
ology\, algorithms\, problem-solving\, and more. He also created the open-
source mathematical animation software manim\, which powers the graphics b

SUMMARY:Hixon Center Climate Talk: "Navigating Climate Change with Grief\,
Hope and Humor"
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Boyd\, co-founder of Beautiful Trouble and the Climate C
lock\, is coming to campus with his new climate book I Want a Better Catas
trophe (praised by Brian Eno &\; Bill Mckibben\, with starred reviews f
rom Kirkus &\; Forward). He puts on a full “stand-up tragedy” show
to help us get our head and heart (and our dark twisted funny bones) aroun
d one of the great existential challenges of our time.\n\nThe event will s
tart at 6 p.m. and run for 90 minutes. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Light refre
shments will be served at 5 p.m. in the courtyard outside of the auditoriu
m. Masks recommended.\n\nHere is what Andrew’s team has to say about his
new book\, I Want a Better Catastrophe:\n\n"With global warming projected
to rocket past the 1.5°C limit\, lifelong activist Andrew Boyd is thrown
into a crisis of hope\, and off on a quest to learn how to live with the
'impossible news' of our climate doom.\n\n"He searches out eight leading c
limate thinkers—from activist Tim DeChristopher to collapse-psychologist
Jamey Hecht\, grassroots strategist adrienne maree brown\, eco-philosophe
r Joanna Macy\, and Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer—asking them:
'Is it really the end of the world? and if so\, now what?'\n\nWith gallow
s humor and a broken heart\, Boyd steers readers through their climate ang
st as he walks his own. From storm-battered coastlines to pipeline blockad
es and 'hopelessness workshops\,' he maps out our existential options\, an
d tackles some familiar dilemmas: 'Should I bring kids into such a world?'
'Can I lose hope when others can't afford to?' and 'Why the *** am I recy
cling?'\n\n"He finds answers that will surprise\, inspire and maybe even m
ake you laugh. Drawing on wisdom traditions Eastern\, Western and Indigeno
us\, Boyd crafts an insightful and irreverent guide for achieving a 'bette
r catastrophe.'"

SUMMARY:Mudd Talks– Measuring a Makerspace: How to See a Makerspace in Ac

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next session in our Mudd Talks series\, "Measur
ing a Makerspace - How to See a Makerspace in Action\," with Professor Mat
thew Spencer on Tuesday\, October 24\, at 5:30 p.m. PT. Makerspaces are p
opular in institutes of higher learning for good reason: they provide acce
ss to voluntary\, hands-on learning experiences that can improve student s
elf-efficacy\, belonging and technical skills. Harvey Mudd's Makerspace
is even better situated to benefit the college because it provides opportu
nities for 5C collaboration and blending liberal arts and technology\, whi
ch serve the college mission. But how do we know that the Makerspace is pr
oviding these benefits? This talk\, in addition to showing off all the lat
est and greatest making facilities at Mudd\, will review empirical Makersp
ace literature and discuss some preliminary data coming from studies of th
e Harvey Mudd Makerspace.\n\nOpen to all HMC constituents.\n\nMatthew Spen
cer (he/him) is an associate professor of engineering at Harvey Mudd Colle
ge where he teaches about electrical engineering and directs Harvey Mudd's
Makerspace. His research interests include micro-electromechanical system
s\, circuit design\, design automation\, and teaching and learning\, espec
ially in laboratories. At Mudd\, he has led course design of several lar
ge laboratory courses\, including the robot-based introductory sequence fo
r the engineering major\, and he currently serves on the Faculty Executive
Committee. His engineering education research has won multiple best-in-di
vision paper awards at American Society of Engineering Education annual co
nference\, and he was a past winner of the Outstanding Technology Directio
ns paper from the International Solid State Circuits Conference and an Int
el Research Fellowship. His making bona fides arguably trace back to 7th
grade Home Economics\, where he learned to sew buttons to pants\, truly a
lifelong skill.

iety at Harvey Mudd College.\n\nDrawing upon plant pedigrees\, novels\, ma
gazine advertisements and agricultural experiments\, Burns will show how p
lant reproduction alternately inspired and frustrated early 20th century e
ugenicist theories of biological determinism in the United States. Plants
’ reproductive plasticity enabled Mendelian scientists and eugenicists a
like to counterintuitively imagine sex and race as discrete\, rigid and vi
sible traits subject to cultivation. In an effort to thwart narratives of
eugenics bent on controlling procreation through material and discursive r
egimes of plant breeding\, early 20th-century Black thinkers and scholars\
, such as Zora Neale Hurston\, Charles W. Chesnutt and George Washington C
arver draw upon the queering power of plant plasticity—plants’ ability
to propagate through vegetative\, networked\, self-pollinated and otherwi
se nonheteronormative means—to upend assumptions of reproduction based o
n gender and racial difference. Even as plant plasticity connected the app
aratus of agricultural plant breeding and its attendant relationship with
eugenics\, within the oppressive sexual economies of the plantation\, it a
lso offered a means through which to conceptualize Black formulations of k
inship that stem from but grow beyond the racialized ecologies of plantati
on afterlives.\n\nKathleen M. Burns holds a PhD in English from Duke Unive
rsity. Her research has been supported by fellowships from Duke University
\, American Council of Learned Societies and the American Philosophical So
ciety. Her book project\, Vegetal Forms: How Plants Cultivate Life in Lite
rature and Science\, looks at how storied and material relationships with
plants produce racial\, gendered and ethnic formulations of the human.

SUMMARY:CS Colloquium: Titus Winters ’02
DESCRIPTION:“Software Design Is The Key To Software Testing”\n\nFor sof
tware engineering practitioners\, the past 10 years have seen an explosive
rise in the adoption of continuous integration systems and automated soft
ware testing. Having sufficient test coverage is now considered key to mai
ntaining enough control of large software systems to make changes reliably
. Although we’ve learned to write tests\, there is still a lot to learn
about how to test well: With 40 years of invention and innovation in test
strategies and technologies\, it’s hard to know what tools are appropria
te when testing a given interface. Even among industry leaders\, a lot of
good testing is still a matter of “I’ll know it when I see it.” In t
his talk I’ll argue that long-ignored concepts from software design are
essential in understanding how to test appropriately. Along the way I’ll
tie together ideas and technologies from both design and testing: control
\, contracts and design qualities help us understand how best to use unit
tests\, dynamic analysis\, fuzzing and property-based testing approaches.

DESCRIPTION:What are the colonial foundations of plant science? Banu Subram
aniam draws on fields as disparate as queer studies\, Indigenous studies a
nd the biological sciences to explore the labyrinthine history of how colo
nialism transformed rich and complex plant worlds into biological knowledg
e. Subramanian then pivots to imagining a more inclusive and capacious fie
ld of botany untethered and decentered from its origins in histories of ra
cism\, slavery and colonialism. This vision harnesses the power of feminis

SUMMARY:Michael E. Moody Lecture– "Category Theory: The Mad Libs of Mathe
matics\," Tai-Danae Bradley
DESCRIPTION:Mad Libs is a fun word game\, played by filling in the blanks o
f a story with different words: nouns\, verbs\, adjectives and so on. Diff
erent word choices result in different\, sometimes comical\, stories that
are all related by a common template. In some ways\, category theory can b
e thought of as the Mad Libs of mathematics. Originating in the 1940s\, ca
tegory theory provides a framework or “template” that unites many idea
s\, constructions and themes across the mathematical landscape. A category
theoretical viewpoint can also extend to disciplines outside of mathemati
cs\, providing new ways to think about new (and old) problems. Language it
self is one example\, as some ideas behind today’s large language models
\, like ChatGPT\, seem to be pleasantly compatible with existing perspecti
ves in category theory. In this talk\, Tai-Danae Bradley shares more about
these tantalizing connections\, starting with a friendly introduction to
this modern branch of mathematics.\nSpeaker\nTai-Danae Bradley is a resear
ch mathematician at SandboxAQ\, a startup company focused on AI and quantu
m technologies\, and a visiting research professor of mathematics at The M
aster's University. She earned a PhD in mathematics from the CUNY Graduate
Center in 2020 and then spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at X\, Th
e Moonshot Factory (Google X). She is the creator of the mathematics blog
Math3ma as well as a coauthor of the graduate-level textbook Topology: A C
ategorical Approach and a former co-host of the PBS YouTube channel "Infin
ite Series." Her research interests include category theory\, machine inte
lligence and quantum physics.
