From storm-battered coastlines to pipeline blockad es and 'hopelessness workshops\,' he maps out our existential options\, an d tackles some familiar dilemmas: 'Should I bring kids into such a world?' 'Can I lose hope when others can't afford to?' and 'Why the *** am I recy cling?'\n\n"He finds answers that will surprise\, inspire and maybe even m ake you laugh. Burns DESCRIPTION:The Science\, Technology &\; Society Program at the Claremon t Colleges invites you to attend this talk by Kathleen M. Burns\, the 202 2–2024 Hixon-Riggs Early Career Fellow in Science\, Technology\, and Soc iety at Harvey Mudd College.\n\nDrawing upon plant pedigrees\, novels\, ma gazine advertisements and agricultural experiments\, Burns will show how p lant reproduction alternately inspired and frustrated early 20th century e ugenicist theories of biological determinism in the United States. Plants ’ reproductive plasticity enabled Mendelian scientists and eugenicists a like to counterintuitively imagine sex and race as discrete\, rigid and vi sible traits subject to cultivation. In an effort to thwart narratives of eugenics bent on controlling procreation through material and discursive r egimes of plant breeding\, early 20th-century Black thinkers and scholars\ , such as Zora Neale Hurston\, Charles W. Chesnutt and George Washington C arver draw upon the queering power of plant plasticity—plants’ ability to propagate through vegetative\, networked\, self-pollinated and otherwi se nonheteronormative means—to upend assumptions of reproduction based o n gender and racial difference. Even as plant plasticity connected the app aratus of agricultural plant breeding and its attendant relationship with eugenics\, within the oppressive sexual economies of the plantation\, it a lso offered a means through which to conceptualize Black formulations of k inship that stem from but grow beyond the racialized ecologies of plantati on afterlives.\n\nKathleen M. Burns holds a PhD in English from Duke Unive rsity. Her research has been supported by fellowships from Duke University \, American Council of Learned Societies and the American Philosophical So ciety. Her book project\, Vegetal Forms: How Plants Cultivate Life in Lite rature and Science\, looks at how storied and material relationships with plants produce racial\, gendered and ethnic formulations of the human. Having sufficient test coverage is now considered key to mai ntaining enough control of large software systems to make changes reliably . Although we’ve learned to write tests\, there is still a lot to learn about how to test well: With 40 years of invention and innovation in test strategies and technologies\, it’s hard to know what tools are appropria te when testing a given interface. Even among industry leaders\, a lot of good testing is still a matter of “I’ll know it when I see it.” In t his talk I’ll argue that long-ignored concepts from software design are essential in understanding how to test appropriately. Along the way I’ll tie together ideas and technologies from both design and testing: control \, contracts and design qualities help us understand how best to use unit tests\, dynamic analysis\, fuzzing and property-based testing approaches. Banu Subram aniam draws on fields as disparate as queer studies\, Indigenous studies a nd the biological sciences to explore the labyrinthine history of how colo nialism transformed rich and complex plant worlds into biological knowledg e. Moody Lecture– "Category Theory: The Mad Libs of Mathe matics\," Tai-Danae Bradley DESCRIPTION:Mad Libs is a fun word game\, played by filling in the blanks o f a story with different words: nouns\, verbs\, adjectives and so on. Diff erent word choices result in different\, sometimes comical\, stories that are all related by a common template. In some ways\, category theory can b e thought of as the Mad Libs of mathematics. Originating in the 1940s\, ca tegory theory provides a framework or “template” that unites many idea s\, constructions and themes across the mathematical landscape. A category theoretical viewpoint can also extend to disciplines outside of mathemati cs\, providing new ways to think about new (and old) problems. Language it self is one example\, as some ideas behind today’s large language models \, like ChatGPT\, seem to be pleasantly compatible with existing perspecti ves in category theory. In this talk\, Tai-Danae Bradley shares more about these tantalizing connections\, starting with a friendly introduction to this modern branch of mathematics.\nSpeaker\nTai-Danae Bradley is a resear ch mathematician at SandboxAQ\, a startup company focused on AI and quantu m technologies\, and a visiting research professor of mathematics at The M aster's University. She earned a PhD in mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2020 and then spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at X\, Th e Moonshot Factory (Google X). She is the creator of the mathematics blog Math3ma as well as a coauthor of the graduate-level textbook Topology: A C ategorical Approach and a former co-host of the PBS YouTube channel "Infin ite Series."
